Self-guided climbing at Colle dell'Orso
For climbing enthusiasts, the Colle dell'Orso crag, also known as Morgia Quadra, is a true magnet. Located at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, it offers over 400 routes on compact gray limestone, with vertical slabs and bouldery sections, often technical and challenging.
The site is very popular: 8a.nu has 381 routes listed and more than 1,600 completed ascents – a clear indicator of its popularity among climbers.
The adventure begins after about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot (50–60 spaces), easily accessible by car or off-road vehicle. The site offers an almost lunar landscape, with scattered boulders ("morge"), an open atmosphere, and views of the Trigno and Biferno Valleys.
The best time to climb the crag is spring and early summer: the site is well-ventilated, with dry air and ideal temperatures. Be careful, though: in summer, afternoon thunderstorms can occur, while in winter, strong winds can make it impassable.
